Slack Key Guitar Workshop 1:30 pm
Earl Mullins will introduce Hawaiian slack key style guitar. Slack key is a unique playing style developed in the islands, based on alternating bass played with the thumb and melody notes played with the fingers. It can be played on any guitar. While the songs can be strummed, the essence of the sound is played fingerstyle. Slack key style is built on various alternate tunings and pairings of harmonized notes. The workshop will use the most common taro patch tuning (Open G) and will cover basic elements of the style, including turnarounds.
Earl has studied and played ki ho’alu (slack key guitar) for over 20 years with several Hawaiian kumu (teachers) and will briefly demonstrate several songs.
